Research

FILA is not a new idea so much as a newly practical one. Nearly every principle here has a long research history — what has changed is the ability to implement it for every learner at once. This section organizes that foundation.

Themes

How the research is organized

Each theme collects the work most relevant to a particular part of the framework. Annotated reading lists are in preparation.

Learning Science

How people actually learn: retrieval practice, spacing, transfer, cognitive load, and the persistent gap between what feels effective and what is.

Competency-Based Learning

Mastery learning, standards-based grading, and what happens when time becomes the variable rather than the constant.

Learner Agency

Self-regulated learning, motivation, metacognition, and the conditions under which ownership produces better work rather than less of it.

Assessment

Formative assessment, feedback that improves performance, and the difference between measuring learning and ranking learners.

AI in Learning

What current tools do well, where they fail, and honest treatment of the open questions — including the ones without good answers yet.

World Languages

Proficiency research, comprehensible input, and interaction — the evidence base underneath FILL.

Case Studies

Documented implementations, including what proved difficult and what did not survive contact with a real school.

Standing on existing work

These thinkers described much of what FILA organizes, often a century ago. Their central insight was rarely disputed — it was simply difficult to implement for every learner at once.

  • John Dewey

    1859–1952

    Argued that education is a process of experience rather than preparation for a distant future, and that genuine learning is active, social, and connected to real purposes.

  • Maria Montessori

    1870–1952

    Demonstrated that carefully prepared environments, self-directed activity, and mixed-age grouping allow learners to progress at their own pace with the educator as observer and guide.

  • Lev Vygotsky

    1896–1934

    Described learning as fundamentally social, and identified the zone of proximal development — the space where a learner can succeed with support but not yet alone.

  • Jerome Bruner

    1915–2016

    Advanced discovery learning and the spiral curriculum, and developed the idea of scaffolding: support that is deliberately withdrawn as competence grows.

  • Seymour Papert

    1928–2016

    Argued through constructionism that people learn most durably while building something meaningful, and saw computers as instruments for thinking rather than for delivering instruction.

  • Malcolm Knowles

    1913–1997

    Developed andragogy, establishing that learners with autonomy, relevant purpose, and responsibility for their own direction learn differently — and better.

  • Yong Zhao

    Contemporary

    Critiques standardization and test-driven schooling, arguing for learner agency, diversity of talent, and education that develops what is distinctive in each learner.
